221 First Scottish Standing Committee Tuesday 25 June 1996

(Afternoon)

[MR. MICHAEL J. MARTIN in the Chair]

Education (Scotland) Bill [Lords]

4.30 pm

The Chairman: Order. The hon. Members for Moray (Mrs. Ewing), for Perth and Kinross (Ms Cunningham) and for Banff and Buchan (Mr. Salmond), who are not members of the Committee, are present. In order that the Committee be allowed to continue with its proper procedures, I ask them to leave. They will not leave and I shall therefore suspend the sitting for five minutes.

Sitting suspended.

4.35 pm

On resuming

The Chairman: Order. The Committee has resumed and the hon. Members whom I asked to leave are still here. They know that the business of the House must be conducted in Committees and I again appeal to them to leave. [Interruption.] It is obvious that they will not do so. Disrupting the business of a legitimate Committee of the House is a very serious matter. I cannot continue with the proceedings while people who are not nominated members of the Committee are present. I ask the 222 hon. Member for Angus, East (Mr. Welsh), who is a member of the Committee and the Scottish National party Whip, to try to persuade his colleagues to leave. I shall try to ensure that common sense prevails and will, therefore, again suspend the sitting.

Sitting suspended.

4.54 pm
