[MRS. ANN WINTERTON in the Chair]
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (Mr. Jeremy Hanley): I beg to move, That the Committee has considered the draft Social Security (Amendment) (Northern Ireland) Order 1993. The order is short, containing only three paragraphs. Hon. Members will be aware that, last year, Northern Ireland social security law was consolidated by the Social Security Administration (Northern Ireland) Act 1992 and the Social Security Contributions and Benefits (Northern Ireland) Act 1992, which came into force on 1 July 1992. Inadvertently, three provisions repealed in consequence of 4 the consolidations were omitted from the consolidating Acts. In order to restore the statute book to its pre-consolidation position, it is necessary to make an order under paragraph 1(4)(a) of Schedule 1 to the Northern Ireland Act 1974. As I said, three small matters were inadvertently omitted. That is disappointing, but perhaps not unexpected, as the legislation had 348 sections and 24 schedules. Hon. Members will be aware also that the intention, when consolidating, is to reproduce all the existing legislation in a coherent form. It is hoped that will make it simpler to understand and to apply. The amendments made by the order complete the consolidation of Northern Ireland social security legislation. I am most grateful to who have attended the Committee to deal with this small matter, and I commend the order to the Committee.
Question put and agreed to.
Resolved, That the Committee has considered the draft Social Security (Amendment) (Northern Ireland) Order 1993.
Committee rose at twenty-seven minutes to Eleven o'clock.
THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS ATTENDED THE COMMITTEE:
Winterton, Mrs. Ann (Chairman)
Powell, Mr. William
Spicer, Sir Jim
