The Solicitor-General (Sir Nicholas Lye11): I beg to move, That the Committee has considered the Legal Advice and Assistance at Police Stations (Remuneration) (Amendment) Regulations 1990.
The Chairman: With the agreement of the Committee, it will be convenient to discuss at the same time the Legal Aid in Criminal and Care Proceedings (Costs) (Amendment) Regulations 1990.
The Solicitor-General: The regulations make overall increases in the rates of legal aid remuneration of 7·5 per cent. for solicitors and 7 per cent. for banisters. They are 4 carried out in accordance with section 34(9) of the Legal Aid Act 1988, which I remember taking through the House two and half years ago.
