Draft Dental Auxiliaries Regulations 1986

10.30 a.m.

The Minister for Health (Mr. Barney Hayhoe): I beg to move, That the Committee has considered the draft Dental Auxiliaries Regulations 1986. The Dental Auxiliaries Regulations 1968 provide mainly for the setting up of rolls of dental hygienists and dental therapists and specify the types of work that those two classes of dental auxiliaries might undertake. The draft Dental Auxiliaries Regulations 1986, prepared by the General Dental Council, consolidate the 2 amendments that have been made over the years to the 1968 regulations. In addition, a number of minor changes are made, in accordance with the Dentists Act 1984, which simply update references and terminology. The opportunity has been taken by the General Dental Council to introduce some relatively minor amendments, particularly to regulations 23 and 27, which set out the work that dental hygienists and dental therapists are permitted to undertake. I should be happy to answer any questions, but since the regulations have been prepared by the General Dental Council and approved by the Privy Council, I imagine that the Committee will not wish to consider them at length.

The Chairman: That was short and sweet.

Question put and agreed to.

Resolved, That the Committee has considered the draft Dental Auxiliaries Regulations 1986.

Committee rose at twenty-nine minutes to Eleven o'clock.
